Cosmic Interplay: Light and Darkness features the mixed media work of artist Don Shaw and the stainless steel sculpture of artist John Ellis.

Aquila and Altair by Don ShawShaw’s work is strongly influenced by astronomy as he masterfully uses patinas and a technique of embossing copperplate to create the illusion of outer space. “A true work of art is an infinite resource,” says Shaw. “If you look, it will give forever.” Shaw studied at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and has taught and lectured at countless colleges and universities including Harvard, the University of Houston, Southern Arkansas University and Rice University. His work has been exhibited at museums both at home and abroad. Closer to home, Don has been a visiting artist for the South Arkansas Arts Center’s AEGIS Middle School Project in El Dorado. He also has experience working with “at-risk” students and has traveled in Arkansas as a visiting artist and lecturer in Batesville, Conway, El Dorado, Hope, Magnolia, Southside, Texarkana, Pine Bluff, Sheridan, and Watson Chapel public schools K-12 and colleges/universities.

Ordering Chaos by John EllisEllis’s own ingenuity and the guidance of mentors has led him down his artistic path with a chosen medium, stainless steel, that allows the artist to slowly process and express his point of view. This process, which he likens to meditation, combines his thoughts, feelings and skills into a concrete form of self expression. “The main influence in my life and my art is the work of Carl Jung,” says Ellis. “Because of his writing and the writing of his followers I have been able to find ways to look at myself in light and in darkness.” Although his works are modern in appearance and materials, the shapes and symbols he draws on are ancient.
