Formal, antebellum portraits of African Americans, especially from the South, are extremely rare. This portrait descended in an Arkansas family of African American origin. The female subject is thought to be a member of the Nathan Warren Family of Little Rock. Nathan Warren, born a slave, lived most of his life in Arkansas after purchasing his freedom in 1835. Descendants of Nathan Warren donated this portrait to the museum in 2012.
