In this image Marshall-born studio photographer “T.J.” Echols captured an unidentified male with his bicycle. According to studio advertisements on this cabinet card, Echols operated a studio at the “Foot of the Free Bridge” in North Little Rock. In 1897 the first true non-railway bridge was completed across the Arkansas River at Little Rock. Built by the Pulaski County Government, it was designed for foot and wagon (and bicycle!) traffic. The bridge ran from the foot of Main Street in Little Rock to Maple Street on the north side of the river, and was known as 'The Free Bridge,' as there was no toll for crossing.
