Sixteen-year-old Seleze LeFevre painted this floral watercolor in 1856. The verso of the sheet bears the inscription, “Presented to Leon LeFevre by Seleze LeFevre.”653 Seleze LeFevre is the granddaughter of well-known colonial-era settler Peter Lefevre who moved from Arkansas Post to the Little Rock area prior to the Civil War. The LeFevres are among the early vanguard of French Creole settlers who populated Arkansas during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
