Jessica Salley: Portraits
Second Floor Gallery
June 9 through October 8, 2006
Opening reception on June 9, 5 - 8 pm, in conjunction with 2nd Friday Art Night
A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Jessica Salley is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree at American University in Washington, D.C. As part of her degree, she spent a year in Corciano, Rome, Italy, where she was formerly trained in portrait painting, the dominating genre of her show.
Salley, who prefers to paint from models, says capturing the slight mannerisms of her sitters are what make her paintings real, “I am not painting a glossed over, glorified version of a human being, but a person as they are seen through the eyes of another. I translate what I discover in demeanor, mood or interests of a person into color, form and line on canvas.” Her show also includes landscapes of the Italian countryside.
Some of the artist's work will be available for sale through the Museum Store. The opening from 5 to 8 pm on June 9 is in conjunction with 2nd Friday Art Night. Also opening is Spectacular Achievements: Audubon's Animals. There will also be a one-night exhibit of photographs by Arkansas Times photographer Brian Chilson called Politicians, Rock Stars, Sports and Architecture. Live music will be provided by Sean Rock and Roland Gladden. The event is sponsored in part by Arkansas Times.
