This Henry Byrd portrait features of Mrs. William Byers [nee" Lucy Manning, 1810-1846] and her children--- Ann Grow Stewart, Aurelia Adelia Byers, William Preston Byers, and a black servant. William Byers was born in Pennsylvania March 4, 1810. He moved to Ohio & was educated there. He married Lucy Manning and moved to Batesville in 1837. He was a state legislator from 1842-1843. In 1846, Lucy died. William Byers remarried Mrs. Emily Burton Wilson This is the earliest known painting by Byrd in Arkansas. It is also significant because of the image of the black servant; it is the earliest documented painted portrait image of an African American, in Arkansas. This painting is mentioned in C.F.M. Noland's "Spirit of the Times" in 1845.
