Louis (1905-1999) and wife Elsie (1907-2001) taught summer school in Eureka Springs, Arkansas at the Hatchet Hall. At the University of Missouri, Louis trained with Ankenez, Carpenter, Goetsch, Wuerpel and Henri, and in Paris he studied under Moriset. He was close friends with Missourian Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollock. He traveled to Mexico and Central America under both a Carnegie and a Stetson grant.

Freund's work has been divided into four (often overlapping) stylistic phases: American scene, protest, landscape, & Christian. He was also noted as a WPA muralist.
